In our area, the steps on that mountain trail on my blog are more for erosion control on a popular in-town trail than for safety; it's steeper than the photo looks, and with the loose soil (it's loose rock rather than real soil) and very heavy thunderstorms which are common here in the summer, the trail would not last long without them.
